The person in the photo being used in reports that former president Jacob Zuma’s son is dead is actually very much alive.
Sunday night there was an announcement that former president Jacob Zuma has lost one of his sons Vusi Nhlakanipho Zuma.
Reports are that he died in hospital on the 1st July 2018 after a short illness. The details surrounding his death have remained a private matter.
The picture that has been used to express condolences and has even been used by reputable publications seems not to be the right person. It is believed that the person in the photo is Lerato Mphafi.
The confusion apparently stems from a Twitter account of Nhlakanipho V Zuma with the handle @VusiZumaN. The joining date on the page is June 2014. Location Cambridge, MA.
The user of this account even goes as far writing “Happy fathers day to my father His Excellency Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma same to you and yours.” There are a couple of other posts that refer to Jacob Zuma as ubaba as well as photos. Not of them together obviously, but there is enough there to make it appear that there is a connection at face value.
It is reported that Vusi Nhlakanipho Zuma was never a spotlight hungry child and easy to believe that those who aren’t close to the Zuma family might not even know him.
Even the former public protector Thuli Madonsela tweeted using the wrong photo “The @ThumaFoundation and I have noted with shock and sympathy news of the untimely passing of Vusi Nhlakanipho Zuma, son of former President Jacob Zuma Heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues. May his soul #RIP.” She did tweet again using the correct photo.
