Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Church leader Shepherd Bushiri and his wife have been arrested on fraud and money laundering charges by the Hawks.
The Hawks confirmed the arrest today, but didn’t mention who they had detained.
The ECG church have issued a statement in which they confirm that the Hawks have taken prophet Shepard Bushiri and prophetess Mary Bushiri into custody on fraud and money laundering charges.
The statement reads “The Hawks’ case against the pair concerns alleged offences of fraud, money laundering and contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA). The crimes were committed from 2015 in relation to Exchange Control Regulations related to foreign currency in an amount of $1,147,200 (about R15.3m).”
They are expected to appear before the Pretoria Commercial Crime Court on Monday (4th February 2019).
